FSCJ Commercial Vehicle Driving Facility

Florida State College at Jacksonville desired to build a commercial vehicle driving facility that would compete with for-profit commercial vehicle training companies to offer a more thorough curriculum in a state-of-the-art facility. The college’s assignment to RS&H was to design a “gold standard” facility. The site included two 2.7-acre maneuvering pads and a three-quarter mile track that simulated a rural two-lane roadway with four-way stops, pull-overs, and rail crossings. RS&H utilized Civil 3-D to create a Low-Impact Design (LID). This “green” approach retained the large paved areas for truck maneuvering, while minimizing stormwater piping and structures. The track was designed with Civil 3-D as a roadway corridor, and included super-elevated sections and a spiral. Mass grading modeling allowed the designers to find the optimum earthwork to make the project feasible, while balancing the stormwater conveyance.
