In 2010, Terminal B at the San Antonio International Airport opened sporting a new, updated modern facility. The other terminal, Terminal A, had become outdated since it opened in the 1980s and was in need of a renovation. To upgrade the infrastructure for an additional 25 years of useful life and rejuvenate the appearance of the public spaces, the City of San Antonio’s Capital Improvements Management Services (CIMS) initiated a major renovation.
Compatibility with Terminal B was the only restriction placed on RS&H when commissioned as the prime consultant to provide design services. We also provided a terminal facility assessment, evaluation, programming, and scope estimating report for the project. Renovations were split into three phases to assess and evaluate the aging terminal’s infrastructure and architectural finishes before beginning design and construction. This approach allowed the airport to match facility needs to available funding and capacity.
The airport’s operations remained open during the renovations, while scheduling construction was a challenge. The schedule needed to be coordinated with tenants, concessioners, airlines, and the owner, while keeping the public in mind, and involved a working group of about 45 people. Through active communication, the more efficient, long-lasting terminal debuted in June 2014.
