Beach Boulevard (US 90/SR 212) is a major east-west route on the eastern side of Duval County, Florida, and is a primary commuter and hurricane evacuation route. It connects State Road A1A in Jacksonville Beach at the Atlantic Ocean to the heart of Jacksonville, just east of Interstate 95.
Beach Boulevard varies between four and six lanes along its 14.8-mile length. The 1.5-mile section between Hodges Boulevard and San Pablo Road underwent construction to provide a six-lane roadway.
With 40,700 motorists a day using this segment of Beach Boulevard, the need for improvements was evident as the roadway serves residents, tourists, and other visitors to the area and is an evacuation route for coastal residents during hurricane season.
The project between the roads included drainage, utility, lighting, signalization, and landscape improvements. The improvements provided six 12-foot wide travel lanes (three in each direction), four-foot wide bike lanes next to the outside lanes, and five-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the roadway. Considering the need for public transportation, the new six-lane section included four designated bus bays for Jacksonville Transportation Authority buses to pull out of the travel lanes to pickup and drop off bus riders.
