RS&H’s Tyler, Texas office presented an award for $5,000 from the RS&H Elevate Fund to the Discovery Science Place museum of Tyler, Texas. The mission of Discovery Science Place is to ignite curiosity in young minds through fun, hands-on exploration.

RS&H Tyler Office present Elevate Grant.

The museum is treasured in the Tyler and East Texas community since the early 1990s and continues to provide educational outreach programs to promote STEM-based learning. Some of the programs offered by the Discovery Science Place include:

Science Saturdays

The University of Texas at Tyler students and volunteers from the community host specialized learning sessions for elementary and middle school children.

Science Safari

The Discovery Science Place provides a traveling museum to Title 1 schools in the Tyler and East Texas communities. These are schools where over 50 percent of the student population receives some form of food assistance. Many of these schools are hesitant to allow students to leave the campus for security reasons, so the Discovery Science Place brings the museum to them.

STEM Like a Girl

Middle school-aged girls are invited to the museum for a day of hands-on classes hosted by women working in STEM. Four revolving classes feature an aspect of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. A panel discussion is hosted with the presenters of the classes, where the girls are encouraged to ask questions about pursuing a career in STEM.

Summer and Winter Camps

The Discovery Science Place offers learning-based camps that explore topics like electrical engineering, computer programming and robotics, chemistry and more to keep the STEM learning going all year round.

Discounted Admission

The Discovery Science Place provides discounted admission to any family involved in a food assistance program. Their mission is to involve every member of the East Texas community and ensure that access to quality education is afforded to all of their neighbors.

The Elevate Fund’s grant will go to help support students participating in these programs and to help continue the Discovery Science Place museum’s mission of promoting education in STEM.

“I have served on the Board of Directors for 4 years now, and on behalf of the Board, the museum, and every child whose life we plan to improve by inspiring a love of Science, we want to thank RS&H!” said Kate Lindekugel, Chair, Programs & Exhibits committee and environmental specialist at RS&H.
